Apple has not made it easy for users to update macOS if you have an old Mac computer. Basically, you need to purchase a new Mac computer to keep up with the macOS updates. macOS Catalina (10.15.7 is the latest version) requires MacBook Pro released from 2012 onwards. My MacBook Pro 15 inch Early 2011 did not have a chance to run either Mojave or Catalina. So, it’s running under High Sierra 10.13.6. I thought it was the fate of an old Mac computer.
Thanks to the honourable dosdude1 who released the incredible macOS Catalina Patcher program that enabled me to install and run the latest macOS Catalina (10.15.7) on my MacBook Pro 15 inch Early 2011 model using an external enclosure for a new start up disk.
If you would like to install and run macOS in the following way: Catalina on any unsupported Mac computer, please test it with the external enclosure device first. Do not install it on your Mac itself until you are satisfied with the performance. My MacBook Pro 15 inch Early 2011 cannot use iSight camera whilist running Catalina 10.15.7 using this Patcher. (appears to be a known issue for some Mac computer model using this Patcher). It means I cannot use FaceTime or Zoom as a result. Nevertheless, it gives me an oppurtunity to run those programs designed only for Catalina (otherwise for Catalina and Mojave). So, I will not intall Catalina on my MacBook Pro itself but keep using High Sierra as a main macOS.
I tested with an external enclosure containing a very fast NVMe drive but my MacBook Pro only has USB2 ports, so it takes a little time to start up but much faster starting up time comparing with using conventional mechanical drive as a startup disk.
