It appears Microsoft has changed the process of twice (2) a year with Windows Feature Update. I tried to update one of my Windows 10 Pro PCs from version 1909 to version 2004 using the Media Creation DVD.
It failed miserably showing an error message of “Setup has failed to validate the product key”. Once it comes to this stage, none of suggested fix on the net will work.
The only way to update your previous Windows 10 version 1909 to version 2004 is to use the built in Windows Update that shows up as a “Feature update to Windows 10, version 2004”. The update is also available for Windows 10 users only.
It’s up to any individual PC when it shows this Feature Update. You can’t really control whether the update shows up or not. (It will come up eventually, though)
Once you choose that option, the main update file gets downloaded onto your PC. Unlike with previous updates, the Windows update screen remains the same on the display just showing progress percentages. At the end, you are prompted to restart your PC. I guess you need a luck as I’ve seen so many times that online feature updates have failed before. I’ve been using Media Creation DVD updates until now (not even on USB based updates) as I was confident that this was the only the sure way to apply a feature update.
Well, I guess I’ll live with this change for now. I tested another PC of mine that had Windows 10 Pro verson 1909, the result was the same for the one above.
I used DVD-RW media to create the Media Creation DVD for a Windows 10 2004 installation disk. Just in case I attempted to copy all the contents of the DVD to the local hard drive of the 2nd PC I attempted to update from version 1909 to version 2004.
Then, it failed to copy some files saying could not read the source disk. I copied downloaded iso file to the local temp folder and extracted all the contents to the folder.
I ran the setup.exe file with Administrator privileges, and installation of the update started as normal. I suppose it was a media (DVD-RW) issue, not a Microsoft issue. It is better to use a DVD R+ (or DVD R-) to create the installation media. I have decided to leave this Blog post as is for the reason if any user would encounter the same issue.
More bugs coming out of Windows 10 feature update version 2004
Microsoft admits issues with Windows 10 feature update version 2004. This is serious enough as Microsoft is saying “Devices using Storage Spaces might have issues using or accessing their Storage Spaces after updating to Windows 10, version 2004 (the May 2020 Update) and Windows Server, version 2004. When using some configurations, partition for Storage Spaces might show as RAW in Disk Manager”.
Not too sure why Microsoft pursues a big twice (2) a year update. One big update in a year should be more than enough whilst releasing monthly update patch after patch.
